Researchers have thoroughly studied how human users interact with search systems and found that humans are not good at formulating effective search queries. This has profound effects on the quality of results produced by search engines which, in turn, produce user dissatisfaction. Ideally, the human user should be disburdened of this requirement and the system should figure out what the “best” search query is.
The invention consists of a set of general techniques to generate search queries to find relevant documents of interest to a user in real-time.
The invention takes as input a document of interest to a user and automatically formulates a good query that describes the document. The invention accomplishes this by executing two steps: First, it extracts a set of key descriptor tokens of the document, i.e., its key words and phrases. Second, it processes these tokens to formulate a search query. Both steps are performed in real-time, i.e., the execution times are such that it can support online interactions.
