Technology Overview
Understanding how people communicate with one another plays a very important role in many disciplines including social psychology, economics, marketing, and management science. This invention is a sensing service running on smartphones to capture real-time conversations in order to automatically build conversation networks of users. It uses a hybrid speaker classification scheme that exploits an adaptive histogram-based classifier to non-obtrusively bootstrap the in-situ speaker model learning through phone collaboration. The conversation clustering algorithm proposed is able to detect fine-grain conversation groups even if speakers are close together. A POMDP-based energy control scheme is incorporated to enable the service to run continuously in the background. The invention requires no user intervention. With the sensing service running on the phone, it automatically detects conversation clusters occurring within a user's proximity range. Development Status Technology Readiness Level 5 on the scale by the Ministry of Defence Singapore. About the Research Group Prof. Chan Mun Choon works in the Department of Computer Science at NUS. His research interests are in the areas of wireless sensor network, delay-tolerant network, energy-efficient protocols and mobile computing. |
